{"id":51,"date":"2004-12-12T09:06:00","date_gmt":"2004-12-12T09:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.oubliette.org\/blog\/?p=51"},"modified":"2019-12-30T09:58:46","modified_gmt":"2019-12-30T09:58:46","slug":"tap-tap-s-this-thing-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oubliette.org\/blog\/index.php\/2004\/12\/12\/tap-tap-s-this-thing-on\/","title":{"rendered":"[tap, tap] &#8216;s this thing on?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">I had a strange experience the other day &#8211; I finally &#8220;got&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livejournal.com\">LiveJournal<\/a>.\n  I had always thought of LiveJournal (and blogging in general) as the \nmost egregious example of sharing your proverbial vacation photos with \nan uninterested world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A year or so back, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.ucr.edu\/~titus\">Titus<\/a> tried to explain the value of LJ to me:  how he and his classmates at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.hmc.edu\">Mudd<\/a>\n had been inseparably close until graduation and then scattered to the \nwind, and that using LJ was a tool to keep in touch, after a fashion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Time passes, and in the middle of October, Dawnise and I move to \nSeattle.  The other day, I wanted to feel connected to friends in \nSouthern California.  And blogging made sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I tried signing up for Live Journal &#8211; and their registration insisted\n that all my proposed passwords were based on reversed dictionary words \n(which they aren&#8217;t &#8211; not even remotely) and I gave up after three \nattempts.  Instead, I grabbed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.movabletype.org\">Movable Type<\/a>\n and installed it on the webserver that hosts my domain.
