{"id":27,"date":"2019-11-24T15:04:00","date_gmt":"2019-11-24T15:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.oubliette.org\/blog\/?p=27"},"modified":"2019-12-29T18:19:29","modified_gmt":"2019-12-29T18:19:29","slug":"i-just-found-a-cookie-in-our-oven","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oubliette.org\/blog\/index.php\/2019\/11\/24\/i-just-found-a-cookie-in-our-oven\/","title":{"rendered":"I just found a cookie in our oven"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">I just found a cookie in our oven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, it was a cookie once, or since it\u2019s a UK oven, maybe it was a biscuit. \u00a0Either way, by the time I found it, it was a cookie-shaped lump of carbon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might not think it terribly odd for a cookie to go rogue &#8211; make a daring escape off the back of the baking tray and land in the back of the oven. \u00a0Out of the proverbial pan and into the, um, convection wind tunnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In general I&#8217;d agree with you. \u00a0What makes this ex-cookie interesting is that we haven\u2019t made cookies in the 5 months we\u2019ve lived here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We use the oven pretty frequently, and it&#8217;s never smelled like burning cookie, so I guess this cookie was missed in the so-called professional deep clean of the kitchen before we took residence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cookie discovery was prompted by an inventory of our cooking supplies in advance of (American) Thanksgiving. \u00a0We\u2019re going to attempt to feed 9 people out of an oven the size of a shoe box and a 24\u201d wide four element cook top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be fair, the kitchen fixtures in our flat are fairly \u201c<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=Bog%20Standard\">bog standard<\/a>\u201d &#8211; and in many London flats they\u2019re all you could squeeze in. \u00a0But our kitchen is actually surprisingly large. \u00a0It\u2019s (much) bigger than the kitchen in our Seattle townhouse, and actually larger than the kitchen in our previous house, in the Seattle suburbs. \u00a0So I figure the kitchen has standard fittings because it\u2019s a rental, and the owner has little incentive to spend money on nice things their tenants are unlikely to take care of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So normal fixtures, but still, 9 people&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It promises to be entertaining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once Thanksgiving is in the rear view, we\u2019ll start to figure out Christmas. \u00a0This will be the first year since 2012 (our first year in Luxembourg) that we\u2019ve been \u201chome\u201d for Christmas, since then we\u2019ve been in Europe for markets and spent the holiday with good friends (and incredibly accommodating hosts) in south east London. \u00a0This year my sister, brother-in-law and niece are coming to London. \u00a0High on the list of questions will be \u201chow does one get a Christmas Tree home on the tube?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stay tuned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But for now, to all the American recipients of this message, here\u2019s wishing you a very happy thanksgiving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cheers.<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I just found a cookie in our oven.
