{"id":2064,"date":"2025-08-10T04:03:02","date_gmt":"2025-08-10T03:03:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.oubliette.org\/blog\/?p=2064"},"modified":"2025-08-10T18:59:46","modified_gmt":"2025-08-10T17:59:46","slug":"things-that-go-without-saying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oubliette.org\/blog\/index.php\/2025\/08\/10\/things-that-go-without-saying\/","title":{"rendered":"Things That Go Without Saying&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">As someone who\u2019s spent most of his career working in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/At-will_employment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">at will<\/a>\u201d America, I find long <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Notice_period\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">notice periods<\/a>\u2026 a little strange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems sensible to keep your departure on the Q.T. for a while, so only people who &#8220;need to know&#8221; get told. But <em>someone<\/em> always needs to know, so your departure is never <em>really<\/em> a secret. And before long &#8211; and long before you\u2019re gone &#8211; practically <em>everyone<\/em> knows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those days and weeks can feel a bit like attending your own wake, or listening to your own eulogy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some stop seeking your input, stop including you in conversations, even stop making eye contact. Some decide you can\u2019t help them accomplish\u2026 whatever it is they\u2019re trying to accomplish anymore, and stop involving you.  Anything you\u2019ve asked for tends to fall to the bottom of people\u2019s priority lists, or on the floor, whichever is further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People reach out to say farewell, or find out why you\u2019re leaving, or both. And some, who regret that you\u2019re leaving, try to get more shared time. Try to get more of whatever they think you\u2019re good at, or good for, in the time that\u2019s left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was one of those interactions that made me write this, and suggested its title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A colleague, who I\u2019ve come to respect as a co-worker and value as a friend, said some very kind words about the impact I\u2019ve had over the time we\u2019ve worked together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All prefaced with \u201cit goes without saying\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And book-ended with \u201cand the things that go without saying are often the things most worth saying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Absolutely true.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As someone who\u2019s spent most of his career working in \u201cat will\u201d America, I find long notice periods\u2026 a little strange.
