The World as a Stage

Just before leaving for San Francisco, I stopped at the library so Dawnise could pick up some books that she had on hold, and while perusing the "new and interesting" shelf ended up picking up Shakespeare: The World as Stage mostly 'cause it was by Bill Bryson.

I didn't realize 'till I cracked it open on the flight to CA that it wasn't Bill Bryson being Bill Bryson, but rather it was a biographical on the Bard.

There have been countless books written about Shakespeare - and this one chose to distinguish itself by writing only about what we actually know about him - not speculate, not wish we knew, and not a random walk through the times he lived in.

So it's short.

Really short.

And quite an interesting read. It goes from birth to death, and addresses the origins and course of the "who really wrote Shakespeare" argument.

Those who are well versed in the subject are unlikely to find anything new - save, perhaps, for learning how little of what they know is actually documented fact.
