Experiments in Sleep

When we moved to Washington, and into our first house here, we bought a new mattress (and bed). It's a Sealy "backsupporter" with a fancy memory foam pillow top, and after only four years, it looks like we're in the market for a new mattress.

For the past several months, Dawnise has woken up with a sore back, and the mattress seems to blame. So yesterday on the way home from breakfastlunch with friends we stopped at the soon-to-be-closing Costco Home store and tried some of their offerings.

Dawnise most liked a Simmons "beautyrest" plush firm model - definitely a bit firmer than our current bed, and without the memory foam topper.

As an experiment, I flipped our mattress over - despite it being finished on only one side and claiming to not need flipping. Seemed like a cheap test. Since the bottom doesn't have a nice pad, or nice fabric, it ended up being too stiff, there was no movement isolation, and rolling over made a noise like walking on rice-paper.

I woke up with a sore back, but Dawnise reported sleeping at least as well, if not slightly better, than normal.

So it seems we'll be shopping for a new mattress in earnest this week.
