Unpleasant surprises
I figured we might have a cheap solution to Dawnise's media player desires - her Blackberry will take micro SDHC cards, so I figured for very little money, I could turn her phone into a 16GB media player. All I'd need is the aforementioned SDHC card and a copy of The Missing Sync to let her sync the phone with iTunes. I even had a pair of 2.5mm stereo headphones that I bought when I had my Treo.
Of course it couldn't be that easy...
I copied some music manually to my phone, brought it and the headphones downstairs to demonstrate, only to hear sound out of one of the phones. Turns out that the model Blackberry we both have (the 8100) only has a mono headphone jack (I mean really, WTF).
So there goes that idea.
We chatted a bit about which ipod might be right for us - and it seems the real answer is "none of them." 'cause Apple's all about compromise. She wants capacity - so that points to a classic, but she'd also like widescreen video, and that points to a touch (which fails the capacity test, and is hard to justify from a value perspective), and she'd really like to only carry one device, which points to an iphone, which fails both the value and capacity tests.
Grumble.

There's no standardization of 2.5mm 4-ring connectors, so many adapters and headsets are incompatible across vendors. I think the BBs are actually stereo, but there's some vendor-specific crap involving loading resistors, to mux one of the pins for call and playback control. Remind me next week at work and we can google up some info.
