Fast, Light, Cheap
I've been doing more looking at lenses today - online - not living in NY, I don't have the luxury of just wandering into B&H and actually touching them.
Always with the tradeoffs.
I like fast lenses, 'cause I light shooting in available light. So I really like the 24mm/f1.8 and 50mm/f1.8 I have. I nearly never need a tripod, provided I'm willing to sacrifice depth of field, and catching moving subjects in low light takes effort, but no flash.
So on that basis, I think I've talked myself out of the "super-zoom" lenses on the market - they're all just really slllloowwww. Like way lots slower than the S3 IS Dawnise took to Africa.
So that puts me back at square one in terms of choosing a good carry zoom.
One lens that I don't want to be interested in is the companion to the kit lens (EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS) - the 55-250 f/4-5.6. It's cheap, compact, light, and image stabilized, but not terribly fast.
And it's EF-S, so it lives and dies with the body, but realistically, that's probably not a huge deal as if and when I upgrade, I can sell it along with the body as a kit.
What I think I really want is an EF 28-200 IS USM, but getting the image stabilization means sacrificing a bunch of reach on the high end (vs. the 28-135 IS USM).
Decisions, decisions.
