Neither a Borrower...

We've decided to move forward with the kitchen remodel, despite it costing significantly more than we'd planned. We've got a meeting with the contractor mid-week next week to go over the final plans and discuss scheduling.

Sometime between now and then, Dawnise and I need to decide how we're going to pay for the project. We put a roof on the house out of pocket this year, which wasn't completely unexpected but was a non-trivial chunk of money, and bought a car late last year, so we're not as flush as we might otherwise be.

The roof was a necessity, and the car certainly made commuting during the winter less stressful and potentially deadly, but they did have an impact on the bank account.

So now we need to decide if we take a home equity loan for some of the kitchen, or if we further deplete our savings.

To that end, I've been shopping rates over the last few days, and so far the front-runner seems to be good old OCTFCU Schools First FCU, but even there, we'll pay more to borrow the money than we'll earn keeping the funds in the bank. Still, keeping that chunk of cash around "feels" right, even if it doesn't completely make sense mathematically.

In hindsight, we probably should have financed the car, seeing as how the rates they were offering at the time were way better than the rates we can expect to get on a (fixed) home equity loan. C'est la vie.
