A Sailor Called to the Rocks

I've been waiting (and trying) to see Tina Dico for years - and I'm happy to say that last night's show at the Nectar lounge was worth the wait.

The opening act - a four-piece called Two Loons for Tea wasn't bad. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the drummer knew how to play without drowning out his band-mates, but the lead guitar was too loud in the mix, making it hard to hear the vocalist. Not knowing any of their songs on the way in, I understood only small snippets of lyric.

Around 10, Tina took the stage - one woman, two guitars - and turned the packed room into her thrall.

She played a bunch of material off Count to Ten, which I'd resisted buying until the show, and now have a signed copy of, and with a bunch of stuff from previous albums.

I've been listening to the new album in snippets this morning - it's got a lot more of a twangy guitar western bluesy feel to it than her previous work. I'm really liking it, but I think I'll forever prefer the live renditions I heard last night...

When I got to the front of the signing queue all I could think of to say was "brilliant set, thanks, and come back soon."

I meant every word.
