A Month With a Blackberry
It's been about a month since I decommissioned my Treo 650 in favor of a work-provided BlackBerry 8100 ("Perl").
I've found that I like it much better than my Treo, despite the predictive type keyboard taking some getting used to.
It's a good form factor, has good voice quality, and a solid software stack. Opera Mini is way better on it than it was on the Treo, and the built-in browser is completely usable.
I'm not sure how much of my good experience is 'cause of the wireless email/calendar/contacts sync provided by the BB Enterprise Server at work. My personal email was easy to setup, and while the client is slightly less feature rich than SnapperMail, it pretty much "just works."
If I had every really used it for the Palm, I'd probably be excited about the "coming soon" status of Documents To Go for the BB, but I almost never used it, so I just don't care that much.
And there's a pretty healthy ecosystem of third party software, including an ssh client, network-aware file manager, multi-alarm clock, and of course all the Google mobile apps - including Maps and GoogleTalk). The built in media player works well, and the phone has a micro-SD slot, though I'm not currently using it.
The fact that you can get one for free with a two year contract from T-Mobile through Costco sorta seals the deal.
Dawnise has been in the market for a new phone for some time now. At the moment we're still holding off to see what comes out of the 3G iPhone, and specifically rumors that AT&T may actually subsidize them (as opposed to locking you into a 2 year contract and still making you pay full price for the phone).
A $200 iPhone is a lot closer to sane than a $400 iPhone, but it's going to be really hard to compete with free.
