Vacation Recap

After fifteen (count 'em fifteen) hours, three flights, and a whole lot of hassle caused by the fact that our return flight from SDJ was booked on American Airlines we made it home this morning just after midnight.

We ended up getting booked on an Aero Mexico flight from SJD to Mexico city, had enough time to claim our bags, get through security, get to Alaska and get on a flight from Mexico City to LAX where we had to get off the plane, clear customs, get our bags, re-check our bags, leave the security perimeter, go-through security again, and get back on the same flight to Seattle. 15 hours, and not a decent meal all day.

But even the craptactular time we had getting home (which was better than some - there were a handful of folks who went from Cabo to Seattle by way of Chicago... look that one up in your handy atlas) couldn't erase the trip, which was a great time, and very relaxing.

We (all 350-odd of us, once you count employees, spouses/guests, and kids) stayed at the Villa Del Arco on the beach in Cabo - about a 15 minute walk to "downtown." Nicely appointed, though the restaurants and drinks were hellishly overpriced and unremarkable. We had some good Mexican food - though it was harder to find than I'd hoped, being smack dab in tourist-ville - and only a small number of folks in our group were hospitalized for Amoebic Dysentery.

We spent most of the week lounging around and in the pool, hanging out with friends, exploring the beach front/downtown/marina and not drinking the water.

So much beer.

And so little of it worth drinking.

What else are you supposed to drink when a bottle of water costs more than a beer due to the two-for-one drink specials?

Naturally the one I liked enough to order again (Indio) isn't available in the US.

We made a couple trips to the local Walmart (as one of the folks on the trip put it - 'I hate Walmart, but not as much as I hate getting exploited by the hotel') and Costco to stock up on bottled water, snacks, and booze, and discovered that unlike the US, Mexico gets Magnums. We literally bought Walmart ouf of their stock the first time, and ended up eating them for breakfast the morning of our departure.

We did a little snorkeling, a lot of just sitting around, and a fair bit of walking on the beach (which translates to a fair bit of saying "no" to beach vendors).

I read a book (more on that later), and didn't touch a computer 'till the last day when I took advantage of the free wifi in the lobby to check on our flight situation.

A very good time, with some great people.
