The New Cruelty
After arriving in Cabo to find my phone a useless brick, and spending a chunk of an afternoon playing physical hide-and-seek with one of the other team members who needed to find me to resolve a problem back in the office, I've ditched AT&T.
The process of porting my number to T-Mobile (the preferred carrier @ work) was almost too easy. I made sure to be in the room while the phone call was made in case either side needed to speak to me - but all I needed to do was provide the number and my AT&T account number. A couple hours later my Treo lost the network, and rebooting my newly issued Blackberry caused it to pickup the right number.
When I got home I let Dawnise play with the Blackberry a bit, and we inadvertently re-created the scene from LA Story where Harris (Steve Martin) tries to use the voice dial feature on his phone to call mom and ends up calling everyone but. It had us both in stitches, but doesn't speak well to the voice dial features in the Blackberry.
Last night I called AT&T to cancel my service and got the final shock - porting the number away had actually done the right thing and canceled my service. I fully expected them to keep billing me 'till I called them.
T-Mobile coverage at the house is fine, and since the plan's handled by work, I don't imagine I'll be talking to them enough to learn to hate them in the near future.
I may setup Dawnise using my old Treo as her phone+calendar+address book. The Internet experience on the Treo is pretty marginal, and probably not worth the extra monthly cost.
Or, I might sell the phone on ebay and buy her a BB Perl, if I end up liking mine.
