He robbed from the rich and he gave to the poor...
Since HD-DVD has officially lost, and the add-on drive for our XBox 360 will soon be as useful as the 2400 baud US Robotics modem I still have on a shelf in my office, I reordered my Netflix queue, sorting all the stuff I really wanted to see on HD-DVD to the top.
The other day we sat down and watched The Adventures of Robin Hood.
It made me realize that audiences during the studio era must have had more imagination and suspension of disbelief than modern audiences (or me, at least). I can't watch Claude Rains in anything without hearing the opening voice-over to Casablanca in my head.
There's not much to say that hasn't been said about the film itself - there's a reason we're still watching it fifty years on. The restoration was very good - sound and picture were crisp, and the disc was packed with extras.
On a related note, I had been recommended The Invisible Art: The Legends of Movie Matte Painting by one of the graphics guys at work, which Dawnise was kind enough to procure for me from the public library. It was a fascinating book, and happened to feature a couple of matte's from this very film.
