I *knew* it was too easy...
I always do our taxes early - and if the government owes us money, we file early.
I'm usually really good about making sure we've got all the documents we're waiting for, and taxes are pretty much a non-issue...
Well, Dawnise came in from getting the mail and said "we got some tax information."
Sweet!, I thought, our refund arrived...
No, we got some tax information. As in a form from the lender who we went through to buy this house. Due to some uninteresting and overly complicated events around the purchase, we ended up paying points to this lender. It wasn't originally in the plan, and since the funds came out of the proceeds of the sale - and not my pocket - it was something I had completely forgotten about.
This lender immediately sold our loan to another, who got us our 1098 in mid January - so I had no recollection at all that another one was outstanding.
So now I have a 1098 from them, with another deduction - and a non-trivial one - that I should have included on our return.
Quit'cher bitchin' - I hear you say, it means a larger refund.
True.
But it also means filing an amended return - and just like there's no such thing as bad publicity, there's no such thing as a good way to bring attention to ones self from the IRS.
We're very conservative when it comes to claiming deductions - so I'm confident that we haven't done anything wrong - and I'm equally confident that wouldn't stop an audit from being a royal pain in the ass.
That'll teach me to file early.
Sometimes the early bird gets the worm, and sometimes it becomes breakfast.
