I... Am Not Left Handed
Shortly before we ended up moving out of So. Cal I took a fencing class with a friend (you out there Geoff?) - enjoyed it a lot, although my knees didn't.
So when Dawnise saw that Bellevue Parks and Rec were offering an intro fencing class, she encouraged me to sign up (and actually, she did the signing up for me, 'cause she's sweet that way). The first meeting was supposed to be two weeks ago, but it was postponed due to poor participation, so the first meeting was tonight...
There ended up being eight of us in the class - the youngest probably around 8 and the oldest in his mid 50's. One young lady - late teens, I think, though as I get older I'm less capable of judging the age of those younger than me with any accuracy.
To my surprise, we'll be learning épée, rather than starting with foil as is typical.
The two ladies instructing didn't wow me with their pedagogy, but I'm trying to withhold judgment. We went over basic safety (a good start), did some stretching, and straight into basic stance and footwork. I was surprised at how quickly I found my stance, and for a few moments during the drill I even "just acted" - not thinking about foot position or order of motion. And I can already tell that my knees haven't gotten better since I did this 4 or 5 years ago.
So we'll see - if the class goes well, I may have found a structured activity to get me off my lazy arse.
