CD Storage (Again)
Seems every few years I re-tackle the problem of how to store our CD collection. Last time I did this, in mid 2004, I ended up with two cherry finish storage pedestals from storeyourmedia.com.
Over the last year, we've outgrown them. According to ReaderwareAW our disc count passed 700 some time while back. To compound the problem, the new house doesn't really have suitable floor space - the pillars are in the dining room at the moment, and they don't look terrible there, but it's not really the right place for them.
Finally, thanks to the Roku and Firefly Media Server I don't really use the physical CDs all that often. Were it not for the fact that both cars have in-dash CD players, I'd probably relegate them to boxes in the basement and call it done.
The Subaru, being a new car, has an AUX input jack built in (along with a power point - all nicely concealed in the center console), but the BMW doesn't. It is (or was) available as an after-market part from BMW, and were I not hesitant to rip into the dash, I'd have probably installed it already.
Oh, and while I have a portable media player, Dawnise doesn't - and I'm not sure she'd use one if she did.
So I'm trying to decide if I (a) find the smallest footprint that will store 800-ish CDs while providing reasonable access, (b) buy Dawnise something like a Sansa or other non-ipod (let's just say I like to "Think Different") and work out the AUX connector in the BMW, or (c) just leave the CDs in boxes and listen to whatever happens to be on top.

Check your local homebrew record store. (The one that still carries a small selection of vinyl.) They probably have a few systems that are worth looking into. Heidi and I bought two 500+ (closer to 525 if you buy imports) CD bookshelves which we finished ourselves from our local Rasputin which they buy from a local woodworker. They don't exactly hide the CDs, but they do help keep them organized and I still pull CDs often when mixing.
