Bandwidth

I've decided to try to quantify the variability of my cable modem bandwidth. Just before 7 this morning, I ran a speed test:

From me to Seattle:

Download 32217 kbps, Upload 1393 kbps

Figuring that the hop across the lake to Seattle doesn't prove much, I tried hitting San Jose

Download 10795 kbps, Upload 1312 kbps

Coming home this evening, I get

To Seattle:

Download 27064 kbps, Upload 1300 kbps

and to San Jose:

Download 2716 kbps, Upload 1382 kbps

Which tells me it's not my neighbors fault my download rates suck... It's Oregon's'.

Out of curiosity, I tried a test to NY, NY...

Download 6405 kbps, Upload 1381 kbps

The other way to look at that - besides blaming Oregon - is to assume that network traffic in the bay area is just as bad as freeway traffic...
