You Said How Much?

Since we started thinking about moving, I keep saying "we have too much stuff." I've now got two moving estimates that cement that notion in my head.

Regardless of if they calculate it as weight based (the guess is we have 20,000-ish lbs) or time based, both estimates came back in the neighborhood of <doctor-evil>five thousand dollars</doctor-evil>.

What the hell! Assuming a team of four people working two 10 hour days, that means I'm paying them $60/hour.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't think of moving as "skilled labor" (like, say, a mechanic) - it's the ability to pick up heavy things without dropping them.

It's insane, and makes me think maybe, just maybe, I'll do it myself.

Ooh ooh! Fly me up there and I'll help! It'll cost you much less than $5k. And I'm more fun to be around than a bunch of movers.
