MusicBrainz - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly
Over the course of the weekend, I debugged the current "stable" release of Picard enough to get it mostly working. It seems to really suck at handling compilation albums, which I have more than a few of.
Out of the 700-ish albums (excluding holiday music, which are all compilations and hence I'm trying to avoid thinking about) I've got all but around 30 tagged.
The biggest annoyance is that I didn't let Picard alter the directory structure of my collection as it updated metadata (I was nervous enough letting it update tags on my "master" FLAC files), so now the album/artist names on disk don't quite match the tags in the files. Easytag can probably fix that up, if I let it.
The second biggest annoyance is the handling of bands that begin with "The" (The Clash, The Fixx, The Go-Gos). Picard adds "Sortname" tags that "do the right thing," but nothing seems to honor those tags. So I think I'm going to have to do a pass over the collection and fixup the Artist tags it "broke."
Ultimately it took way longer than it should have. Most of that time was spent debugging Picard to the point where it wouldn't crash, though it still has odd (mis)behavior when dealing with large collections that I wasn't dogged enough to figure out.
Knowing what I know now, I'm not sure I'd do it again.
