Weekend Recap

Dawnise and I had a very nice weekend - the weather was gorgeous (and they're predicting a clear and sunny 4th, for a change).

Someone told me that Seattle has a really high ratio of convertible ownership per-capita - I dunno if it's true, but weekends like this one are the reason we bought one. It's almost like being on the motorcycle - you experience the road much more viscerally, without all the safety gear.

Saturday we took a drive up to Port Townsend - wandered around down town a little and had lunch at a sushi place near the ferry terminal before heading back home.

Sunday after breakfast we spent three hours walking through the Grand Forest, and met a group of "kids" (average age was maybe 22) who are trying to get a D&D group going. I was mildly surprised that "Jordan", the organizer, was a she, and there was another she (aside from Dawnise) in the room when we got there.

They're going to meet a potential DM with a home-brew setting next weekend (all represented in a dozen pages - drew a sharp contrast with other home-brew settings I've played in - just color me spoiled).

I'm not sure Dawnise and I will end up participating - we've got stuff going on for the next few week(end)s, and if the move to the east-side plan shapes up it would be sorta rude to join the group just to vanish after at most a few sessions.

Over the course of the weekend we watched A Beautiful Mind, which had been on my list for some time. I enjoyed it, despite the criticism that it overly simplified Nash's life and his illness. I thought Crowe did a very good job, and Jennifer Connelly was both terrific in the role and absolutely beautiful. Ed Harris and Paul Pettany were fantastic as well.

We also finished the first season of Doctor Who - and I have to say that David Tennant has his work completely cut out for him to try and fill Christopher Eccleston's shoes. I think Eccleston has taken a strong second to Tom Baker as my favorite Doctor incarnation, and I suspect if I went back and actually watched some of the Tom Baker episodes I remember fondly, I'd find that some things are better left to memory.
