How Can It Overheat in Near Freezing?

Yesterday, about a block from work, the head warning indicator on the Trophy started faintly glowing. I had been stuck at a light through two cycles, idling for probably 10 minutes, which is nothing, relatively speaking. On top of that, the ambient temp was in the high 30´s, so I was pretty sure this was a bad thing. This morning before leaving I had a glance at the Trophy service manual and I rode the RS in to work.

When I got home, I read up on testing the cooling fan (which is hidden behind the radiator - in the seven years I´ve had the bike, I don´t think I´ve ever heard it turn on). I pulled the necessary body work, found a suitable jumper wire to conduct the test, and long story short, I´ll be ordering the fan switch from So. Cal. Triumph tomorrow. Looks like installing it is only a minor job - made messy by the need to drain the cooling system - so hopefully it´ll be back on the road soon - I don´t love riding the RS in the rain...
