Hard-Boiled Cyberpunk Overload

I don't normally re-read books - not 'cause I don't enjoy reading, far from it, but because there are so many books, and so little time. I'm the same about wine, unless I need a bottle to take to a gathering, I'll always buy the one I haven't had over the one I have.

The one standing exception to my "no-re-read" policy is Neuromancer, which I tend to end up reading about every year.

The other day, someone at work asked for book recommendations for his upcoming vacation. Preferably mysteries, war novels, or non-fiction. I suggested Altered Carbon, Broken Angles, and Woken Furies, by Richard Morgan.

After sending the email, I couldn't get Altered Carbon out of my head, so I bought a copy from Amazon (I had initially gotten it on loan from the uber-cool Seattle Public Library) and I'm currently about half-way through it.

Damn is it a good book. I wish I could say that the second time, knowing where the series goes, I'm getting more out of it, but the truth is I'm still enraptured by the pictures it paints, and I'm pretty much along for the ride (again).

Combine that with the fact that I'm finally working my way through Half Life 2 (sorta feels like I should play the game, given that I work there) and I'm pretty much up to my eyes in gritty, dystopic science fiction.

Oh, and it seems there's an unabridged audiobook version of Altered Carbon. I'm probably going to grab a copy when I order Broken Angels. 14 CDs, whew.

I loved Altered Carbon (on your recommendation) - I have the second one waiting in my 'to read' pile - it's getting closer each day.

do you like graphic novels? i HIGHLY recommend the sanmdman series by Neil Gaiman.

in winter, when the canyon commute in on 4-wheeels, i do the book-on-tape thing. sure beats those yapping minnnies on the radio!
