Asus W3J Initial Reactions
After an annoying delay thanks to UPS, my notebook arrived at the house yesterday. After dinner, I took it out of the package and did a quick DOA test, and I took it with me this morning on the ferry ride to work.
After having it for only an hour, it's clear why they're so hard to get 'hold of in the states - ASUS has a winner on their hands here.
When I started grad school in 2002, I searched long and hard for an intel notebook that had the right mix of power and form-factor. It had to be beefy enough to develop on, and light enough to carry on my back every day without putting a permanent curve in my spine. Essentially, I wanted something "strong enough for a man, but made for a woman."
At the time, the answer was "no such animal." I'm happy to report, ASUS seems to have bullseye'd the target, and managed to make the machine nice-looking while they were at it. (Well, save for the power brick, it's a brick. Why is Apple the only company that gets that bit right?)
The nicest surprise, after having purchased several Dells - all of which show up with a veritable boat-load of unnecessary and unwanted preinstalled crap, was the fact that aside from Norton Security Suite and Nero, there was nothing extra installed.
I haven't tried playing the game on it yet, but I suspect it'll do just fine.
I'll post further updates as I have more time behind the keyboard, but so far, so good.
